Molly Hatch Update

I keep hearing reports from Lauren about how things are going in the studio. This is my plea to you all to keep me posted about what is happening there! Tyler, I want to see travel images. Mathew, I NEED to see an image of you on your motorcycle cross-country trip next to an image of you on your beloved scooter. Linda, I hear you made some good work while you were at the Ranch? SHARE! Plus, newbies, I want to find out who and how you are! Get those two girls their blogger id's so we can get to know each other!
To do my part, I will give you a short and sweet update about what Oliver and I are up to here in VT (see glorious photo). I am now set up in my studio, which is turning out to be fantastic. The studio itself is 1100 sq ft but there is a 400 sq ft storage area attached! It is $300 a month--aka affordable. I am looking for a studio mate, so if anyone knows of a ceramic person who might want to share, help a girl out! It would be $150 a month plus electric and heat.
Oliver is busy building us a small 12' x 24' cabin and in the mean time we are camped out in my parents guest Yurt. I recently found out I am a semi-finalist for the Kohler residency and I got a Solo show at the Clay Studio in 2009. Look for my interviews with Christa Assad, Ayumi Horie, our own Jeanne Quinn and Sanam Emami in the oct/nov issue of American Craft Mag. Plus, i hear that there will be a review of my show at Vertigo in the next issue of Ceramics Monthly.
Be in touch!

Treachery

And here's the show I was in: Arm's Length In: Ceramics and the Treachery of Objects in the Digital Age.

http://www.scrippscollege.edu/news/press-releases/ruth-chandler-williamson-gallery-presents-the-64th-scripps-college-ceramic-annual

I collaborated with Amanda Marchand, a photographer in Brooklyn; we had a great time. It's all about reproduction: material, digital, biological. You can ask me if you want.

LA sightings

When I was in LA for the Scripps show, Tom Muller, Christian Tedeschi, Nikki and I spent an afternoon gallery-hopping . . . the best thing we saw was Diane Landry's show at Solway Jones. The installation was poetic and odd and made you feel all of the tragedy of the world using umbrellas and harmonicas-- I'm not kidding. Check out a video of the piece on her website:

Also, we had a really delish lunch at Mozza, sitting next to Jennifer Beals (Flashdance and The L Word).

You Know What You Should Do?

The next time someone says "you know what you should do..," try listening carefully to their suggestion. Ask questions and take notes about this suggestion. Get as many details as you can. Be careful not to insert your own logic or understanding into the suggestion. Repeat the suggestion back to the suggestor to verify complete comprehension. If necessary (and it probably will be), have the suggestor draw a diagram and/or concept map to further clarify the suggestion. If the suggestor seems uncomfortable with their new role, gently encourage them to give you more details, ideas, and clarifications. When there is no more information to be given by the suggestor, begin to implement the suggestion - being careful not to allow your own interpretations to interfere with the suggestor's plans. If questions arise during the process, feel free to contact the suggestor for additional advice. Do exactly as they suggest. When you have completed the suggested plan, present to the suggestor a formal project report on the results.

OooOoooOo wall paper!

Virgil Marti's Bullies wallpaper (1992/2007), mounted under black light, repeats yearbook photos of leering adolescent boys across a garish toile pattern. Bullies evokes both the proverbial high school "boy's room" and the ubiquitous black-lit-night-club toilet facility, anonymous zones of males aggression and anxiety. Against the background of fluorescent garlands, the threat is gradually defused, and the stares seem to become melancholic, even precious: bullies turned wallflowers. (the fabric studio)

Parking Meter Emancipation

This is a piece by Tim Foss done in the fall of 2007 in which he authorizes himself to free this parking meter from its narrow existence, and celebrate its undervalued excesses.

Namaste Cups

....and some India cups from your favorite non-potter potter. I'm having a great time playing with the sand-blasting, it's a nice break from all of the sewing and hot glue gun burns.

Around the Studio

Happy New Year! Can't wait to see you all back at the bake-o butch-o mat. I took some snap shots of the studios before break. What a fabulously experimental group we are!
